Continuing Medical Education

Most meetings are held either in the Anaesthetic Library, Staffroom or in the Orthopaedic Library on the 3rd floor.

There is a library situated in the Postgraduate Centre.   The Centre publishes a list of educational activities taking place throughout the hospital and to which you are most welcome.

Once a week, there is a departmental meeting at 16.45 hrs. This is on TEAMS. The day of the week this is on changes every six months. As of Winter 2024 it is currently on a Tuesday.

On usually Wednesdays or occasionally Thursdays there is a teaching afternoon during term time. If your name does not appear on CLW for the Wednesday afternoon teaching, then it is not compulsory that you attend if it is not counted as part of your working hours, perhaps you are on zero hours or post nights. However, it is desirable that as many trainees as possible do attend.

Doctors in training on their Critical Care rotation should be released to attend the FRCA teaching programme. If this is not happening, please bring it to my attention or discuss with the Head of Department for Critical Care.

Every month there is an audit afternoon which affects all departments in the hospital and is held at different locations. Again, if it is a day you don’t expect a zero-hours or leave, then you’d be expected to attend this CME. Strangely this often does not appear on CLW so please keep your eye out for these “audit afternoons”. Dates are listed here.

All trainees are obliged to maintain a portfolio of all educational activity.

Trainees have up to 30 days study leave per year. 5 days are top sliced for the tutorial programme, leaving 25 days during which they may attend external courses or apply for private study leave. This leave may not be carried over from one year to the next. There is a maximum of 5 days private study leave allowable per part of each exam.

Tea Trolley Teaching

This way of delivering teaching across our department has been established and if you would like to take on the running of it, contact Dr Hooper.

The concept is very simple: A pair of anaesthetic trainees (or a trainee and a consultant) go from theatre to theatre with one taking over the anaesthetic case while the other runs a teaching session. This typically involves a ten minute talk on anything from a new guideline, an exciting piece of kit or running through a scenario. The target audience include all grades of anaesthetists and ODPs/anaesthetic nurses.

Statutory and Mandatory Training

How to Access

The Statutory and Mandatory Training is mostly on TURAS Learn. An up-to-date matrix of what training modules you require can be found on the intranet in a Spreadsheet at the bottom of this page here:

Training (scot.nhs.uk)

TURAS Learn is here  Home | Turas | Learn (nhs.scot)

The corporate induction on your first morning may cover some of these subjects already. The departmental induction is also mandatory training of course. Otherwise, these modules add up to about 17 hours of work. Please complete them during your IAC period, fitting in an hour before and/or after your Novice Induction to anaesthesia tutorials which occur in the 3rd and 5th week of August.
